“Look at the funny little penguin!” and “What a silly-looking penguin!” Hearing this all day long is enough to make any little bird angry, especially when he’s NOT A PENGUIN! This is the story of a puffin who is upset that he’s constantly mistaken for a penguin. He finally reaches his breaking point and goes on a rant about the many differences between the two. A little girl stops him in mid-speech because she does know the differences, and he listens as she explains to her father why puffins are her favorite. When you are feeling alone and misunderstood, sometimes it only takes the understanding of one small person to turn things around. A charming picture book with 18 fun colorful spreads showing children what frustration and feeling alone looks like from the outside, how to get over anger, and how to reach out to others when they are frustrated.

What a great way to conduct a nature lesson! I’d love to use this book in an animal storytime, and I’d love to see teachers using this book in their Kindergarten and first grade classes. The illustrations are adorable, eye-catching, and use bright colors (especially on the puffin’s beak!)… The puffin has character, with facial expressions and body gestures that teachers can use for emphasis during a read-aloud, and that kids will immediately recognize, whether it’s frustration or happiness.

This book is absolutely delightful and completely adorable. It would be a perfect book to share with children and is something that I’d really consider using in class. This cute little puffin just wants to be loved and for people to know that he is utterly fed of being called a penguin! I mean, they’re polar opposites! Being called a penguin every day is making this puffin angrier and angrier until… well you’re just going to have to read it to find out!

The Angry Little Puffin is an adorable book. The Puffin is frustrated and upset that he is being mistaken for a penguin, until a young girl comes along who recognizes him for what he is and helps him feel understood. The book is a great tool to help preschool kids understand and express their feelings. It is also filled with facts about puffins and how they are different from penguins. Kids who like animals will enjoy this book and find the puffins tantrums funny too!
